Hurricanes Helene and Milton left many Pinellas County residents in need. So, the city of St. Petersburg is ramping up efforts to provide critical recovery resources to residents. The city has organized two upcoming events to guide residents through the permitting process, available financial aid, and strategies for building future disaster resilience.

Virtual Session on the 49% Rule (or FEMA 50% Rule)

On Friday, November 8th from 12-1 pm, the city is hosting a virtual information session on the 49% rule or FEMA 50% Rule. This regulation affects permitting for repairs and rebuilding in flood-prone areas. The session aims to clarify the rule’s requirements and streamline the permitting process for residents. Attendees are encouraged to register in advance and submit questions beforehand. Registration details and more information on the 49% rule can be found at www.stpete.org/rule49.

Hurricane Recovery and Resource Meeting

On Wednesday, November 13th from 5-8 pm, the city is hosting an in-person event at The Coliseum (535 4th Ave N) focused on hurricane recovery resources. Mayor Kenneth T. Welch and representatives from FEMA, the Florida Division of Emergency Management, and Pinellas County will outline available recovery assistance, financial aid options, and updates on the permitting process.

This meeting will also provide a forum for residents to share feedback, identify areas for improvement, and propose resilience strategies to strengthen the community against future disasters. Insights from this session will help shape ongoing recovery discussions and planning among local organizations.

The event will feature resource tables with representatives from FEMA, city departments, and community organizations to offer personalized assistance to residents. The program will conclude with a Q&A session. For more information and pre-registration, visit www.stpete.org/recovery.

These two sessions demonstrate St. Petersburg’s commitment to supporting residents as they rebuild and prepare for future challenges.
