Florida Power and Light Company (FPL) has proposed a temporary additional charge on customer bills next year due to the recent hurricanes. Over the past 14 months, Florida has been hit by four hurricanes, causing extensive damage.
If approved by state regulators, a $12 fee would be added to the typical 1,000 kilowatt-hour residential customer’s monthly bill, starting in January. This additional charge would last for 12 months and would help cover FPL’s restoration costs after the hurricanes.
FPL assures that even with this charge, customers’ bills would remain below the national average. The bill amount may vary based on electricity usage. The temporary charge would also help replenish a reserve fund that was largely depleted by Hurricane Idalia.
