The Family Center on Deafness (FCD), the only non-profit of its kind in Pinellas County, is reaching out to the community for support after suffering an estimated $100,000 in damages due to Hurricane Milton.

FCD has long been a cornerstone for hundreds of families across the county, serving a significant portion of the 800,000 deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in Florida, half of whom live in the Tampa Bay area. However, the recent hurricane brought heavy water damage, turning the once-vibrant center into a scene of loss.

Executive Director Anthony Verdeja expressed the gravity of the impact: “We lost over 80% of what we had. What used to be a very colorful and vibrant environment now feels sad and empty.” He emphasized the difficulty of recovery, noting that, like many non-profits, FCD lacks sufficient funds to cover costly repairs.

For families who rely on FCD, the loss is profound. FCD is the only local organization dedicated to supporting youth and families in the deaf and hard-of-hearing community, fostering a deep sense of belonging and connection.

“We believe in supporting each individual as part of their family and community,” said Verdeja, stressing FCD’s holistic approach.

Longtime participant Sarah Traczyk, who has been connected with FCD since elementary school, shared how much the organization means to her: “I love how connected and supportive everyone is. I’ve never felt alone with FCD.” Having met her husband there, Traczyk now brings her two-year-old son to FCD programs, where he’s learning both sign language and English.

Another parent, Michelle Ellis, echoed the impact: “FCD has changed our lives. Without them, our kids would feel alone and isolated.”
