The City of St. Petersburg has partnered with the Pinellas Community Foundation to create the “We Are St. Pete Fund,” a new initiative aimed at supporting local recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Helene’s devastating impact. The fund provides targeted assistance to affected residents, small businesses, and city employees.
In launching the initiative, Mayor Ken Welch highlighted the critical need for community support: “Hurricane Helene has left many of our residents and businesses facing devastating losses. This fund will not only address immediate recovery needs but also strengthen our preparedness for future challenges.”
The city has committed an initial $200,000 to the fund, with half covering administrative expenses to ensure all subsequent donations directly benefit those affected. The remaining $100,000 will support immediate disaster relief efforts. Strong community backing has already emerged, with three major contributors—The Foundation for a Healthy St. Pete, the Tampa Bay Rays, and local residents Trevor Burgess and Gary Hess—each pledging $100,000.
The hurricane’s impact on St. Petersburg has been severe, with storm surge exceeding six feet and flooding more than 100 miles of roadways. The resulting damage has affected homes, businesses, and crucial infrastructure throughout the city.
Contributors to the fund can specify how they want their donations utilized, ensuring targeted support for areas of greatest need.
