Tropicana Field was left heavily damaged on October 9th by Hurricane Milton, prompting the Tampa Bay Rays to find a new field for their 2025 season. The ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World is one of the top options, with the Rays having previously played two series and part of spring training there in 2023.
The hurricane “shredded” the roof of Tropicana Field, leaving the team unable to open their 2025 MLB season at home. Repairs will take until at least 2028 when their new stadium opens nearby. The team is currently displaced indefinitely, assessing the damage.
The Rays have not commented publicly since October 10 but mentioned in a staff memo that an update is forthcoming. With the 2025 opening day just 162 days away, the team must decide if they need a temporary field for a few months or until the new stadium is ready. They are reportedly considering 50 locations.
Disney requires the least upgrades but could face scheduling challenges due to existing youth events. Players and staff will need to relocate, regardless of the chosen venue.
