The Clearwater Marine Aquarium, which sustained significant storm damage, will reopen on October 18, debuting the Aqua Lanterns Festival of Lights.

After enduring substantial damage during Hurricane Helene and losing power when Hurricane Milton hit Sarasota County, the aquarium is ready to welcome visitors again. While the facility will reopen to the public on Monday, it will kick off its Aqua Lanterns: A Chinese Festival of Lights celebration on Friday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

According to the event description, “As the sun sets, the aquarium transforms into a glowing seascape, featuring stunning illuminated sculptures up to 13 feet tall of whales, turtles, dolphins, sharks, as well as penguins, jellyfish, and other sparkling sea creatures. Guests can stroll through this mesmerizing marine world and discover over 30 beautifully crafted lantern displays next to the amazing real animals throughout the aquarium.”

Tickets are $45, with prices increasing to $55 after Tuesday. For exhibit dates and times, visit the aquarium’s website here.

The aquarium sustained severe damage when Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region on September 26. Though it avoided a direct hit, Helene brought dangerous storm surges and devastating winds to the Tampa Bay area. Storm surge inundated the facility, damaging equipment and essential tools needed to support marine life.

“All other resident animals are safe, and some animals have been moved within the facility to ensure they are secure while we address impacts to their habitats,” aquarium staff reported following Helene.

When Milton made landfall as a Category 3 storm two weeks later, the aquarium experienced power outages and minor damage to fencing at its Manatee Rehabilitation Center, some exterior lights, and a few solar panels. Thanks to donor support, the aquarium raised $150,000 to aid recovery efforts.
