Federal officials have proposed a rule to implement the REAL ID requirements in phases, offering potential flexibility before the final deadline. Under the 2005 REAL ID Act, Florida travelers must have a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, ID card, or other accepted documentation to board domestic flights, enter federal buildings, or nuclear power plants. Though the current deadline is set for May 7, 2025, this new rule would give agencies like the TSA flexibility to phase in requirements over the next two years.
REAL ID cards require proof of identity, Social Security number, and Florida residency. Costs vary: $25 for an ID card, and $48 for a driver’s license. If you don’t plan to fly domestically or visit federal offices, a REAL ID is optional.
However, the REAL ID cannot be used as a replacement for a passport when traveling internationally. It also has no impact on a person’s ability to vote, register to vote, apply for federal benefits, access medical care, or participate in police investigations. Additionally, it is not required to enter federal facilities that do not mandate identification.
